This is an interesting moment in the life of our world. We are feeling a need to move, to get out there, back into what we love. What will that mean? What will be different? What are we going towards?

How does the Michael Chekhov Acting Technique Work?

The urge to perform is always met by the question, “How will I do it?” It is an invitation to create that is exciting and intimidating all at once. How will we take the ideas and impressions we have about the characters we will perform and arrive at that place of confident, radiant expression we seek? Each artist ultimately forms their own process, but fortunately we don’t each have to invent the wheel. The mysterious ‘how” has been sought by dedicated artist-teachers who discovered principles that work.

What’s the dream now? All my life I have turned to forms of artistic expression to help me with this momentous question. My practice has included violin, theatre, singing, movement of various genres, vocal techniques, and Michael Chekhov acting technique. Each discipline gave me a direction, goals, and process towards discovery of my being and identity. I have been very satisfied working in these ways. Emerging actors will learn to bring characters to life in scene work by accessing the building blocks and foundations essential to the Chekhov technique, including psychological gestures and qualities.

Event Summer Acting Intensive for Teens When Monday, June 23, 2014 10:30am – Teens Where Chekhov Studio Chicago (map) 2135 W Wilson (Christian Community Church) Chicago, IL 60625 Other InfoSUMMER ACTING INTENSIVE FOR TEENS Act Truthfully, Transform Imaginatively Acting with the Michael Chekhov Technique for the High School Actor Chekhov Studio Chicago, a professional acting studio dedicated to training actors in the Michael Chekhov Acting Technique, welcomes teen actors this summer for a five day Intensive. Summer Five-Day Intensive for Teen Actors June 23-27, 2014 Monday – Friday 10:30-1:30 PM Fee: $250 Discover the advantages of this approach to acting while diving into your acting craft this summer. Focus of the Intensive will be to
- experience the working process of the technique (which is rooted in movement and improvisation)
- learn tools for developing characters imaginatively
- apply some of these tools to developing a character of your choice. Each actor will be guided to see how to bring this new skill to short scenes and a monologue or a song.

This overview of Chekhov’s Technique will form a good foundation for all styles of acting for theatre and film.

Parents and interested friends are invited to observe during the last class.

The workshop venue for Chekhov Studio Chicago is The Christian Community Church in the Lincoln Square neighborhood, 2135 W Wilson, at the corner of Wilson and Hamilton, a few blocks from the Damen stop on the Brown line.

Chekhov Studio Chicago is Chicago’s resource for studying this cutting edge approach to acting and one of the few studios nationally where you can train in the Michael Chekhov Technique.

The Intensive will be taught by Dawn Arnold, certified Teacher of the Chekhov Technique, trained by the Michael Chekhov Association (MICHA). You can see her in the documentary, Master Classes in the Michael Chekhov Technique, produced by the Michael Chekhov Association and funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. Artistic Director of The Moving Dock Theatre Company and Chekhov Studio Chicago, she is also on the Faculty of MICHA and the Michael Chekhov Acting Studio New York.

Who launched you into your life in art? The Red Shoes Solo Show Project began this year for actors who love working with the Chekhov Technique and want to take the artistic tools of the technique into creative directions. In The Red Shoes Solo Show Project actors are building solo shows based on their own experiences of being in the arts – told in the style of a fairy tale (or whatever style unfolds for your material). In each workshop, we work together as an ensemble to get going, break out into solo work, then come together to show what we are discovering and offer feedback.
Interested actors are invited to join us to begin building a solo show and develop it in any of the workshops devoted to this project, such as this one. We will have several workshops throughout the summer and into next year.

Note: This workshop is designed for actors who have been regularly training in Chekhov Technique or have completed a course in Chekhov Training.
