Chekhov Studio Chicago

The Art of the Actor

Training in Michael Chekhov Acting Technique

“The beauty of his approach is that he offers a direct route to the actor’s creativity by the simplest means.”   Simon Callow in his forward to Chekhov’s book, To The Actor.

We are Chicago’s resource for the Michael Chekhov Acting Technique. Our classes and Weekend Workshops in Chicago offer film/theatre actors, singers, and theatre teachers training in the Chekhov Technique. The Michael Chekhov Acting Technique allows us to move and be moved by the imagination. Through Chekhov’s principles we develop our acting instrument. Through Chekhov’s effective tools for characterization, we are able to inhabit the characters we play with truth and imaginative freedom. In this exploration of the art of the actor, we find ever new goals for our acting as we discover more of our expressive selves.

Chekhov Studio Chicago’s students often choose to participate in international Michael Chekhov Association (MICHA) events. Our training workshops and projects complement and augment training done through MICHA.

CPDU Credit for Illinois teachers is available through our partnership with the Illinois Theatre Association.

Our workshops are taught by Dawn Arnold, certified Chekhov Teacher, Michael Chekhov Association (MICHA) Faculty, assisted by members of our Studio who also are studying with MICHA. Visit also Dawn’s blog on this site Inside the Chekhov Studio and Dawn Arnold’s Gestures.

MICHAEL CHEKHOV TECHNIQUE TRAINING

Training in the Michael Chekhov Acting Technique in sessions held in the fall, winter, and spring. The classes are designed for the actor new to the Chekhov Technique and those actors who wish to gain further mastery of the essentials of the technique. Actors from our Studio who are continuing their study and actors visiting our Studio and who have had previous training in Chekhov Technique are welcome to drop-in to these technique classes.

Level 1

ART OF THE ACTOR – CONTINUING CLASS

Actors who have completed essential training can continue to explore the Art of the Actor weekly in sessions offered in the fall, winter, and spring. In some semesters, this class is organized to work on a performance project, applying the technique to preparing the roles and rehearsing.

When there is no project, these classes include specific studies of essentials of the technique applied to characterization, scene work, and preparing for auditions and performances. Visiting advanced actors may drop-in to this class when it is not working on a performance project.

Level 2 and 3

INTENSIVE WORKSHOPS

Concentrated workshops designed to give actors a retreat for their art. These Intensives, often scheduled in the summer months, are training opportunities and focused explorations on selected aspects of the technique.

Levels 1, 2, and 3

SPECIAL WORKSHOPS

Demonstrating the many ways the principles and approach of the Chekhov Technique can be applied. These are offered occasionally throughout the year. Examples are our Workshops for Singers and our Red Shoes Solo Show Project workshops.

Levels 2 and 3

ART OF THE ACTOR – PERFORMANCE PROJECTS

Actors from our Studio and from other Chekhov training experiences apply their growing understanding of the technique in rehearsing for a Studio performance. The sessions are part on-going development of the technique and part application as we explore characterization, scene study and rehearsing with the principles of Michael Chekhov. They can be offered as part of a continuing class session or as an Intensive Workshop scheduled during the summer.
