About Chekhov

Our dynamic workshops and ensemble-created artistic projects are ways to further your acting ability and to create a dynamic new theatre, a “Theatre of the Future.”

Our explorations are based in the principles of Michael Chekhov.
You’ve heard the name, (that’s Michael, not Anton,) looked at his books (On the Technique of Acting, To the Actor)  and wondered how to do it. Designed by a brilliant actor for actors, the Chekhov Technique gives actors what they most need: creative means - tools, a sense of process, a pathway for expression to flow freely. Focusing on fundamentals of performing - imagination, intuition, expressive freedom of the body, the concentration and radiation of inner knowing - the actor can then bring this sensibility to the creation of character and inspired performance. This liberating approach is ideally suited to both subtle and theatrical modes of acting and is easily adapted to many performance genres. And, of course, its the way The Moving Dock Theatre Company builds its exciting new work for theatre.

The Moving Dock Theatre Company's Artistic Director, Dawn Arnold, is a certified Teacher of the Chekhov Technique by the Michael Chekhov Association (MICHA).
Our Studio is in the historic landmark Fine Arts Building on Michigan Avenue in Downtown Chicago. Two blocks south of The Art Institute in the middle of the block between Congress and Van Buren, just across from the famous Buckingham Fountain, this area is convenient, safe, and right in the middle of Chicago life. Coming from out of town? There are many hotels in the area. Use The Art Institute as a reference point for distance. There is also Hostelling International Chicago a few blocks away.
